You may remember the photo or video of Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya walking amongst rubble in his white doctors` coat to meet with israeli soldiers.  He thought he was going to speak to them and then return to the hospital.  Instead, they illegally abducted him and drove him to an israeli prison.  He is a pediatrician and director at the Kamal Adwan Hospital in northern Gaza.  He had been told by israel to leave the hospital, but he refused, saying his young patients and their families needed him. 

Even when his own 15 year old son Ibrahim died from an israeli drone strike, he buried him outside the hospital and did not leave after this make-shift burial.  He kept the hospital operational despite severe siege, bombardment, and critical supply shortages, until he was abducted by israeli soldiers who arrested him without any charge and took him and several other hospital personnel to the notorious Rakevet detention center beneath the Ayalon prison complex. 

His lawyer reported this month that Dr. Abu Safiya was almost unrecognizable due to all the beatings and torture, and nearly lost consciousness several times during his visit.  He also noted extreme weight loss and difficulty breathing during the visit in July 2026.  He reported that Dr. Abu Safiya said this was the last time he would see him, because he said the israelis intend to kill him. 

It is an outrage that israel is keeping this doctor imprisoned for refusing to leave seriously injured young patients who desperately need medical intervention.  Now they have treated him in such a way that he is in great need of medical help himself, and close to death.  I expect our politicians to speak up for him and 13 other doctors that israel is imprisoning and torturing.  Nobody can pretend to be civilized as long as they allow atrocities like this to continue.
